Default Mazda 6 stock -- why change a thing?

I have a 2006 M6s 5spd. Got it brand new last year and was holding off on doing any mods because I wanted to get some milage in before I make any changes.

Well after more and more thought, I'm not sure its really necessary, the car is pretty powerful stock, sometimes when I'm really tired and not careful with the clutch the wheels spin of the start line (at least until tracktion kicks in) and i"m not even giving it that much throttle. To top it off steering is awesome there really is minimal body roll, I can only imaging how awesome the car would handle with strut and sway bars.

Brakes are great as well, I had 2 occasions where I had to stop short, I mean really stop short, once bacause the guy right in fron of me crashed and once last night when the guy in front of me stopped dead on the highway(why I still don't know), both times abs kicked and stopped the car just in time, there was no tire lockup (ABS works pretty well as well), the brackes engaged and teh car just stopped right in time to avoid collission.

Hence, my thoughts are why disrupt the factory balance that works so well. I was thinking about upgrading calipers, rotors and brake lines this summer but now I'm thinking maybe its not necessary, teh car is good as is, I also had the opportunity to use the tracktion control as I had to go a bit offroad and it works great as well.

Just wanted to see what the rest of you think about this and if you made upgrades how did that work out for you.

I would say that for some people, modding their car is largely a hobby. It's fun to do some work to your ride and make it unique. Others have alead foot, and no amount of power is ever really enough. Then again ther ore those who just want looks, and don't ever change handling or power.

My days of hot rodding and shooting down the highway at high speed are gone, so a bone stock 2.3 would be enough for me. I do like a better sound system, and a few exterior appointments.

It's all a personal choice. Your 6 is well tuned from the factory, and if you don't need anything, just enjoy it.

You also have people like me who compete in one form of racing or another with their 6. For me it's autocross, and while the stock suspension is nice, it could use stiffer components (ie. springs and swaybars) and better dampers. As for power mods, I'm keeping those rather mild I have a CAI installed and love it, the thing smoothed out power delivery and added a bit throughout the powerband, I may get headders and a unichip, but that's it.

I was actually thinking about getting involved in autocross myself but thought that the 6 was a bit heavvy for that competition, where do you autocress if you don't mind my asking.

I'm in Houston, I run with the local SCCA chapter down here. As for it being heavy, yeah it is, but the suspension is as you said, rather good so it's deceptive. Last few events I've only been about 1/10 second a 3 with major suspension mods (ie, springs, swaybars, and dampers) while I'm on stock suspension. Granted, I do have better tires than he does (I love my RE01-R's) so that may have had something to do with it.

If you're in the houston area, you should come out to the next meet! It'll be the first Sunday in January. I'd be more than happy to give you a ride around the course so you can decide if it's something yo want to do or not.

Thanks for the info Cameron, I live in NYC, so I will be contacting my SCCA branch towards the summer, hopefully get a strut and sway bar installed by then and see how it goes.

Dewthenet,

I'd suggest staying stock. Our man Cameron Keffer uses mods, but that's because he races in SCCA. He knows what he's doing. I think the vast majority of modders DON'T know exactly what they're doing, thus they end up posting here, looking for answers as to "what's wrong?"...well, it's the deviation-from-stock that's wrong! Enjoy your car...the engineering that went into it far exceeds what a catalog editor will be able to offer you! Cheers, and happy new year...
