Fiancee's 2011 Mazda 6 rolled over 30K a couple days ago. I changed the oil and air filter, and want to do the ATF. Looks like I have a big shield under the car to remove to drain it, but where is the fill? Normally I fill through the dipstick but I can't find one on this car.

Can anyone give specific location or even better, a pic of what it looks like?

 

If its a 2.0 or 2.5 engine, look over the back of the transmission, you will see a short grey dipstick, its held in by a M6/10mm bolt. Check it in park with the engine running & warmed up. 30,000kms is quite early for ATF change. Check it 1st. If you want to change it only use genuine Mazda MV ATF.

 

Are you sure there is a dipstick on the 2011 models? I looked at a schematic for the 2011 Mazda 6 with 4 cylinder and there is no dipstick listed, only a vent tube. If I put in a 2009 Mazda 6 with dipstick there is a different schematic, although other than the dipstick and vent tube there do not seem to be any other differences.

Rather than a typical dip stick, its a very short, stubby grey dipstick/bung, held in with a M6/10mm bolt. Its on the firewall side of the transmission.

 

Can you look at this pic and see if I'm looking in the right place?


Didn't see anything that looked like a fill hole or spot for a dipstick tube....

You can see the vent poking up at 7 oclock, and right under the black hose that runs from 12 oclock to 5 oclock there is a bolt (didn't realize I didn't get a better pic till now). Could that be it?

 

There is no dipstick tube, just a grey coloured dipstick in the trans on the firewall side of the trans, held in place by a M6/10mm bolt.

 

Just for future searches, and with a BIG thanks to Grim Reaper, I FOUND IT!

Circled in red there is a plastic dipstick that is held in place by a 10MM bolt. Unscrew the bolt and pull up on the plastic block and there is a dipstick attached. Now I have to drop the plastic flap under the engine and find the drain plug.

Mazda was NO help on any of this. From the dealership service dept to corporate headquarters they all act like there isn't a dipstick and there is no way to change the fluid. I'm not sure if this is a ploy on their part to make me take it to a dealership, or if you just have a completely incompetant company from top to bottom. Either way, I intend to drain the tranny, and then I will measure what I drained and put the exact same amount back in through the dipstick hole.

Thank you Grim Reaper for the help. The dipstick/ bung is kinda hard to see and yesterday when I was changing the oil I looked and it was right where you said it was (it IS kinda hard to see).

Any advice on what kind of transmission fluid to use? I've got some Castrol ATF on hand but it's dexron and IIRC these Mazda's use a Ford drivetrain so should I get Mercon?

Edited to add, just reread the entire post and you recommend only using Mazda MV ATF. I'll pick some up when I'm around a Mazda dealer. Thank you again for your help.

 

Do not use mercon, it will die. Only use genuine Mazda MV / M5 ATF.

 

Got it. Thank you again for the help. I'm going to remove the plastic shield from the bottom and change the fluid sometime this weekend.
