Default 04 6 wagon mpg...pathetic, help!

I've read the other posts about the 6cyl fuel economy (or lack thereof) but I just bought this car with 40k on it and I'm getting around 15mpg in mainly city driving with a very conservative driving style...coasting as much as possible. I have been running the AC though and wonder how much that affects mileage. Also, I'm wondering if maybe it needs to be re-tuned...? Any suggestions? Anyone have a wagon they've been able to get decent mileage with? Thanks.

I have a 2004 Mazda6 s v6 sedan and I am having the same problems. I get around 30 mpg on the highway but in the city I get around 15 to 17. I also drive with the a/c running a lot and was wondering the same thing.[>:]

Well, at least now I know that it's not so unusual...small consolation. Thanks.

Haha yeah same here. I'm gonna try driving a little less hastily without the a/c as much as possible and see how that goes.

30 mpg on the freeway is terrific mileage for a 220hp V6.

My wife's gets around 21/22 mpg avg

Yeah, its strange. I have never heard of such a dramatic difference in mpg between highway and city.

I think lots of big V6's are like that...I get 18city/31highway.

Well, peak fuel efficiency should be achieved by a combination of going as slowly as you can safelyget away with, tires being properly inflated, a/c off, and use of cruise control. The key,it seems, is to travel at the slowest speed that's safe and practical. Air resistance KILLS efficiency disproportionally as speed increases. Use of the cruise control is probably the next biggest "helper" towards efficiency. Since a/c taxes the engine directly, having it 'off' when practical is efficient as well. And around town, use as little throttle as possible when taking off from a stop (but you already know that!). Good luck,

David

I have a 2003 V6 auto. I get 25.4 hwy averageon a longtrip. My combined driving, which is probably 70% hwy, is 21mpg. 50k on the car. It is my wife's car. Mileage was never good. Car is good. Nice car. Poor mileage. Car is loaded. Every option available. It will be for sale next March. 21mpg is not good enough in today's world. It was in late 2002 when I bought the car. Car still is quiet and runs well. There are a lot of vehicles out there that get 21mpg combined nowadays. Many that are better. The Mazda6 is what it is.
