Tyre Pressure on TS2

Any idea what the tyre pressure should be for TS2 1.8? The tyres are set at 28psi when the car was collected from the dealers but the sticker on the driver side door pillar says 32psi

I'm running at 32 all round as per the door pillar sticker

Does this tire eating problem only exist in the UK? I have an '08 Canadian Spec - not sure it it applies to me?

Is your tyre problem front rear or both?

Most of the tyre thread talks about rears with a bit of discussion about fronts. My problem seems to be both (I wonder of they swapped them at the service...hmmm) but much more severe on the fronts. So as to get an approx percentage I would be interested to know what the distribution is.

Dads_Taxi 07-10-2008 03:38 AM

RE: Is your tyre problem front rear or both?

My fronts were gone at 12,500, rears at 25,000. They had not beenswapped from front to back. On every tyre the wear was only a 1 inch wide band around the inside edge, leaving the remainder of the tyre with thousands more miles of life left in them. Annoying.

Dave.

Tyre Selection

All

I have just done 17000 miles on my Mazda 5 and I now need a new set of tyres on the front. There is some severe wear on the outside. The original tyres were Dunlop but having read various posts I believe I should try something different this time. I was considering something like Bridgestones or Pirelli.
Can any of you members recommend which tyres I should purchase ?

Many thanks

Con

RE: Tyre Selection

First off, get an alignment, one designed to eliminate your bad tire (tyre) wear.
Second, what size are you looking at and with what wheels? OE's are of course 205/50-17", but other options are available.
What is your driving style? Do you like to take turns hard? Accelerate hard? Drive "gently?" Do you need/want an all season tire?
All of these are a factor... and more.

conboy 09-02-2008 03:26 PM

RE: Tyre Selection

Thanks for your reply.
I am looking for an 'All Season' tyre, Size 195 65 15 91 V.
I am a 'gentle driver'

virgin1 09-02-2008 03:58 PM

RE: Tyre Selection

15's, on a 5 series?? Is that OE for yours?
I know in the states the 5's have the same braking and drive system as my 3 (2.3L, big brakes,) and 15's will not fit, only on the 2.0L base model sedans. 16's are a small as you can go w/that drive train.
If you're sure, I can do some research for you. I do tire research all the time anyway.
Let me know.

conboy 09-02-2008 04:47 PM

RE: Tyre Selection

I'm almost certain that they are 15". I did not buy the 5 as new but I think they are the original tyres.
I keyed my registration into a web site that returns the tyre size and it returned 15".
I will have a further look when it gets bright in the morning.

RE: Tyre Selection

OK, Tires Pt.1
As you may or may not know, tires are a lot more than just the black rubber donuts that hold up the vehicle. These days more than ever, tires are an integral part of the chassis including, suspension, steering and braking. The wrong choice of tire can bring you some serious problems in drivablilty.
First off, the speed rating might be a problem for you.

Q- Up to 100mph
R- Up to 106mph
S- Up to 112mph
T- Up to 118mph
U- Up to 124mph
H- Up to 130mph
V- Up to 149mph
http://www.discounttiredirect.com/images/kotspacer.gifW- Up to 168mph
Y- Up to 186mph
Z- 149mph and over

It is generally not recommended to downgrade the speed rating of the factory tires. This can cause "unusual" handling characteristics. However, if you are truly a "gentle" driver, dropping to an H rated tire will likely do 2 things for you: 1) They often wear better than UHP tires w/a higher speed rating. And 2) They often ride better as well.

edit: Oh, one more thing: If you insist only changing 2 tires @ this time, it's not a good idea to use different speed rated tires. You would be better to replace all 4.

RE: Tyre Selection

Tires Pt2 "Bang for the Buck"
Because of your driving style and what you've said so far, I have been looking primarily @ GT and HP tires over UHP's as came w/the car or EHP Summer only tires.
You should also know that I am not a fan of Good Year or Dunlop's. They are sister companies anyway. Race tires are another matter, but are not made, researched or inspected the same as a production street tire is.Race tirestandards are much, MUCH higher, and are obviously made in smaller numbers.
Your budget is also a consideration. I usually try to go for the "best bang for the buck," which like everything else means some compromises are made, usually wear.
My wife and I are both currently running Kumhos and have been more and more impressed w/them in the passing years. Together, we are on our 3rd set and have seen improvements in their construction and traction abilities.
That said, and w/a budget in mind my firs recommendation would be the Kumho ECSTA KU-27 V http://ssl.delti.com/cgi-bin/rshop.p...=GAN&Achse= , or KH-16 Hhttp://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....s&place=12 , the tire currently on my wife's Saturn and the only tire she HASN'T complained about.
Falken's can also offer good BFB. The Ziex ZE-912 http://www.discounttiredirect.com/di...d=15&ar=65, has garnered excellent reviews and a Best Buy from Consumer and others. I had a set of 512's myself and they were great until they wore down a bit too much and they wore down pretty fast for me.I do drive "spiritedly."The 912's have a better wear rating, lower noise, a better rideand are said to employ a highersilicone content in the tread compound.

RE: Tyre Selection

Tires Pt3 "Moving Up the Evolutionary Ladder"

For a bit more, and moving into the relm of "name brand" tires I would say theYokohama AVID H4S
would be a good choice, though a bit more pricey here in the US. Those that have them seem to like them and most would replace using the same tire.

Continental ContiProContactoffer good traction rating and a decent wear rating also. Conti's are generally pretty soft feeling and should offer a good ride, but a little slower in the steering.
Some things I've read indicate that the General Altimax HPmight be a good choice for you also. A better wear rating and an A traction.

I wasn't trying to confuse you just give some choices for you to pick from depending on your personal circumstances,or ignore as suggestions are just that.
Here's another thread dealing w/the same issue, though most are looking for the best compromise between wear and performance. Perhaps you'll find something there.

Good reviews but I have only seen one online site here in the UK selling them and they appear to be very pricey.
A lot of reviews seem to be critical of how the Michelin tyres handle in the wet.
Hopefully noy an issue for a 'steady' driver

RE: What year is your tire-eating Mazda5?

Problems, Problems, Problems - Took me nearly three years to get the noise from the rear straightened out. If the issue cannot be fixed one the first try I would suggest keeping a record and processing under the lemon law if your state has one. Overall for around town the gas mileage was not that great and after 25,000 miles I will probably need again a third set of tires. This car was a design mistake by Mazda. Do not buy one. It is not worth the money. There are better alternatives out there that will prove much more dependable and satisfying in the long run.

Also:

In September I made my Mazda 5 lease payment. The company mis-posted the amount and processed the check for $90.00 less than what it should have been. I made my October payment.

In the last 24 hours I have received four phone calls from very rude individuals who each have given me a different story as to why I was late $90.00. I responded to the first call prior to researching the issue and stated I would send the amount immediately. I was then called three more times after that and was told they did not have an automated system to record the first calls.

I asked to speak to a supervisor and was given the name of an individual who does not even exist in the company. I was given a fax number and faxed a copy of the check to that number. When I went to call the person I had faxed it too I was told he did not exist in the company. Eventually after four more calls I found that in fact the fax was received and the issue was being researched.

Conclusion undoubtedly the most rude, arrogant and dishonest company I have ever done business with. I personally would not buy any product from Ford Motor company in the future including Ford, Volvo, Jaguar, Lincoln etc. If you do I would strongly recommend not financing through either Ford credit or Mazda.

While the financial future of this company in tenuous they have decided to abuse the customer probably as a strategy to maintain a dwindling cash flow. I also will not do business with the dealer Scott Mazda in Allentown PA.

I have filed a report with the FTC re the harassment by Ford Motor Company by telephone. The number of calls especially given the amount was excessive. The manner of the call agents varies from passive aggressive to out right hostel. These are cruel nasty people. They seem to find pleasure in harassing their consumers.

Scott Mazda!!! I know them!! Didn"t they used to sell Nissan's, Chevrolet's or something else besides Mazdas? Yeah!! Scott Chevrolet!!
In any case I think they are a local dealer network owned by the same guy, or were. They have always had a shady reputation.
May I suggest you write a review, or two about them?

Jun 07. Mazda5 Furano 2.0D

23000 miles and 2 complete sets of tyres. Front are now worn on the outer edge and have had tracking and alignment checked today at ATS. All was within the Mazda recommendation. Clearly the issue is something else. Will contact Mazda on Monday.

RE: UK 2008 Mazda 5 Sport - Tyre Wear ??

I am blown away that the UK versions of the Mazda 5 still have this problem. I have never heard of it happening in Canada, and our 5 (now with 15,000 kms) has not had this problem. If they can fix it for Canadians, why the heck can't they fix it for you guys?

(Maybe you just drive too hard over there :D)

I got my 09 Mazda 5 diesel sport back in the summer, was shocked to need to replace front tyres after only 8000 miles - inner edges completely bald.
Am reading through these threads but there are so many messages I can't find a good summary of what I should do.

I am in Calgary, AB and I am also have the same tire problems. Was told today that I needed 4 new tires. I've had the bushings replaced twice in 2 years. I googled the mazda 5 tire problem and it seems to be pretty bad. Shouldn't mazda pay for this or make it part of recall? I think if enough mazda 5 owners said or wrote to the company, they might do something.

This car could kill!

I am shocked that Mazda are still being allowed to produce this car given that this is a potentially lethal problem with a family car!! The initial thread about tyrewear started in january 2007 and here we are 3 years later and there is still a problem! Now we have this thread being started and highlighting wear on newer models so this problem has not been resolved! I have also posted this message in the original thread. My husband and I had known about this problem but wrongly assumed that the problem had been resolved. We bought a mazda 5http://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/2_bing.gif 57 sport diesel in Nov 2007. In jan 2010 it went in for its second service and we were informed by the garage that this was abnormal tyre wear and they couldn't let us drive home as the problem was so bad! I have attached our photos. We as a family could have been easily killed as we had been due to drive on the motorway a few weeks earlier but thankfully the trip had been cancelled. In reading through the posts and also the dealings that we have had with Mazda we believe that they are a completely dishonest and unscrupulous company. There is no consistency with what mileage they say to expect from these tyres. They have written in our letter that Dunlop changed the compound of the tyres and they changed the geometry of the car as from september 2007. I spoke to a Peter in the technical department in Dunlop who has stated that "we are unaware of any change to our tyres". This incencesed us as we feel that Mazda are lying to the customers. We felt that strongly about the safety of this car that we got rid of ours but I am aware that others may not be in as fortunate a position to be able to get rid of theirs. The scary part of this wear is that unless you get under the car you cannot see the wear as it is on the inner edge of the tyres!
I have sent a block email to vosa, rospa, dft, watchdog, tonight, channel 4, channel 5, sky news, scottish parliament, local MSP, which and numerous newspapers. I have also emailed the Prime Minister. I believe this problem needs to go public as mazda are still refusing to accept there is a serious problem. I hope other who read this will also follow my lead and email as many media outlets. I am aware others have emailed watchdog but I can't believe why they haven't taken on this story yet! Will it take a family to be killed before these cars are recalled!!

Mazda 5 tire problems

To AIMWO4,

My mazda 5 is also a 2007 (bought December 31, 2007) which also has the tire problems. Having to change the bushings on the car should have raised a red flag but I guess they are putting a bandaid on the problem instead of fixing it. Before this issue I never had problems with Mazda. I also own a 1994 mazda protege which still runs like a dream. No issues at all. Mazda was good to me so that is why I bought another mazda.

I am going to write to CBC's Market place, W5, Consumer watch, etc. I'm sure Mazda is aware of this problem but unless we do like the Toyota owners with their brake problems, there is not much they will do to correct the problem. Mazda 5 owners need to make a lot of noise or else nothing will be done about this issue.

I will be putting the 5 back in the garage and putting minimum insurance on it and take out the protege because I don't feel safe driving my 5. Its a new car and it shouldn't have these problems with it.

SpiderMike 04-11-2010 09:26 PM

2008 Mazda5 here in Houston, TX. My wife just had to put the big yellow spare on the rear. The good ol'boy that stopped to helped her quickly looked at the other rear tire. Guees y'all shouldn't be suprised at what is wrong with the rear tires on our Mazda5.

Mazda Campaign - I think we have all had enough!

Hi everyone,

I have been reading through your posts. Even though i do not own a Mazda 5, I sympathise for everyone. I own a Mazda 6 2008 version, on 2 occasions this car has nearly killed me - firstly, my tyre valves blew up without warning & secondly my engine over-ran nearly killing me in an instant hitting 100mph+ before i got it to stop.

My tyres on the 6 have near enough completely worn out and yet i get the blame for driving in a wrong manner. Ok now to my anger and which led me to start a campaign.

With my tyre valve snapping, Mazda dealers & Mazda Motors uk did not care and blew this off! by saying i had bad curb damage to my alloys, i have pictures to prove i had NOT hit the curb, but yet they write me letters with out of warranty repairs because of sufficient evidence of curb damage?

This is the big one & I won’t go too much into detail, my engine over-ran which just means without warning the engine revs hit MAX and being in 4th gear in a 2.0tdi the speed picks up real quick, hitting 100mph I see a sign 700yrds away from a roundabout i was forced to switch the engine off at that speed and swerve my way over the lanes to avoid hitting the roundabout, coming so close to hit these cars and nearly going down a ditch (as the brakes and steering go heavy when the engine is switched off) - coming to Mazda’s explanation!

1. I am not driving the car how it should be driven
2. I am only doing short journeys when the car is designed for long journeys only
3. I didn’t check the oil levels & we have proof to say so by looking at the dip stick (funny that, because RAC last checked it when I broke down)
4. I ignored all warning lights (I have proof to say no warning lights were on)
5. I must have gone to the petrol station and filled my engine oil up with diesel which caused the engine over-run... excuse me?
6. I did not read the hand book which states how the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) works; I got heavily questioned on this subject.

Honestly, I can go on. I have been without my car for 10 months now and its sitting on my drive un-drivable mainly because me and my family are NOT getting in a car that can/would kill us. I have a strong set of research and public that is already backing me up in relation to Mazda UK's assumptions & money grabbing techniques.

Like the rest of you, i have contacted VOSA (no joy), watchdog, all newspapers you could think of, VSA, Japan, Directors, managers etc. One thing I have got some luck in, is my local MP. I told him about my Mazda campaign and he seems interested in it but I need a mass of emails describing everyone’s problems, what happened and what response they got from Mazda if any.

As I already have emails coming through already I am still in the process of designing the campaign site which should be up in a week’s time or so, but mean while you can visit it at: www.mazda-campaign.co.uk and print off the flyer if you can or just read through it, it has our email address on it.

I STRONGLY believe if we all come together we can make our voices heard! And force Mazda to recall all of these problems before someone gets seriously hurt. I am willing to go to any length even if it means flying to Japans head office to put everyone’s points across; all I need is everyone’s support and evidence.

If you cannot visit the site, please email on: contact@mazda-campaign.co.uk

Thank you & i look forward in hearing from you.
