Tyre wear on UK Mazda5
Hello All,
I have a furano 57 plate with the tyre wearing problem, although i have managed 13,000 miles from them!. My rears insides have worn and my fronts have also on the insides too.
My only problem is that i smashed badly the car after 6 months and hence Mazda dont want to offer much help, even though it was a mazda approved repairer!
Anyway, Mazda have realigned my wheels for free (they wherent out in the first place, but they have put the maximum amount of -ve camber on them) for free and are offering to pay 40% of the 4 tyres but they must be dunlops at there £140 price
This whole situation annoys me, i see people are writing to mazda UK and this SMMT. Does anyonne have a link to a letter to use or the address of SMMT as i have 18 months left on my warantee.
What i am also considering is swapping out the alloys to 16 inch alloys as i know the TS2 with its 16s on has not got the problem.
Why though, the tyre on a 16 is the same width, just has extra sidewall height, so the overall size of the tyre is the same, so how come it (apparentley) they dont have the same problems?????
Has anyone tried this idea?

It is the tyre height that affects the Camber (non adjustable in our case). Consider this...if the wheel was ridiculously large, with a negative camber eventually the tyres will touch each other at the top. Use a tyre calculator and links from earlier threads for SMMT. Mazda have not contacted my yet and they have only a few days left to report to SMMT ( I appear to be the only member here to have written to them) The SMMT have actioned on my first letter of complaint to them about Mazda. DO IT!

But, this is the problem, from the center of the wheel to the outer edge, the 17 and the 16 inch tyres are the same. 17s have a smaller tyre wall, because they have a larger alloy, the reverse is true for the 16s, (smaller alloy, larger tyre wall) so with the overall height being the same, how can it be the tyre?

As far as I know:
The sports with 17" rims have bigger brake discs so I am not sure the 16" wheels clear them.
The 16" & 17" rims are both listed as 6.5J wide. What is not listed is the offset (ET??)
Mazda believe that something (be it tyre brand, offset, different hubs etc etc ) on the sports with 17" rims makes the tolerance within the alignment settings (toe in or out) smaller than on the TS2 & TS.
That Mazda are offering to pay a contribution on a 57 plate car shows that they are not 100% sure they have cured the problem.
If neccessary I will write to the SMMT but at the moment the dealer I am using is being helpful so I am waiting to hear from them on some points.
You are correct 16" with 205/55 = 633mm rolling radius 17" with 205/50 = 636mm rolling radius - the centre line of the wheel/hub is 1.5mm higher from the ground than with 16" rims.
I dont think this would make a difference.
Anyone feel free to correct me but wheel offset affects the scrub radius of the tyre. Also should the 17" rims be wider 7J ???
I say again this tyre wear is not just down to too much -ve camber alone on the front - there are other factors at work.
(Possibly more a case for -ve camber with the rear wear in the past.)

Hi. Following on from my previous posts, re tyre wear, I've now had a reply from Mr Hancock which basically was a complete denial and totally failed to address several key points. A letter is going to SMMT first thing tomorrow. Additionally a copy will go to MD Jeremy Thomson as his recent interview talked so much about having "a customer service department anxious to provide solutions to concerned drivers and vehicle owners. "etc!!
Okay! More letters to SMMT the better for Mazda 5 owners. If you present the letter and the copies you sent to Mazda and it shows there are serious and real safety issues they will order an investigation that has to be responded to in 10 days. My letter from SMMT was dated 15 May giving Mazda 10 days. I have not heard from Mazda. I will stupidly assume (*** u me) that they have investigated the issue, got a satisfactory answer and are writing their response to SMMT and copied to me at this instant. Dream on.
Whats the difference then with the US/Candian models and what tyres are they putting on them?
I also wonder if increasing the pressure to the pressure stated for 4+ people will help "lift" the inside edge off the ground enough?

Ok, so i have done some surfing around, the problem does exist in the states but some an intresting point has come out. Basically you can think down two trains of thought, either the toe setting is incorrect, leading you to see the wear more quicker on the insider of the tyre, or there is too much -ve camber.
Looking at my back wheels, they lean in, its not hard to see!, so people have started changing out the upper rear arm up with a more highly adjustable one. Hard you think, not really i am lead to believe.
Current mazdas cambers dont allow for much adjustment, but these ones can take up to +5!
