Default Optimum speed/RPM for fuel economy on diesel sport?

There's no information on this in the drivers manual. Does anyone know?

Generally I like to keep the rpm above 2k when I drive, but my wife prefers 1800 rpm and changes up a gear as soon as possible. I feel that changing too early strains the engine. Which of us is right?

Above 2,000 RPMs is typically something you see recommended for small displacement gasoline engines; diesels are easily capable of sustaining 1,800 (or lower even).
