Hi all

Since I bought my 2005 Mazda 5 last year I have found I have to fill it up with 4-5 litres of engine oil every 4-6 weeks.

It sometimes takes a second or two to start too,

It also smokes under hard acceleration too.

The car has 110,000 miles and is a 55plate (uk)

What are my options?

Am I ok to continue to just fill it up with another 5 litres of oil every month or two until the car finally dies in a couple of years, or should I look at getting a replacement engine put in (pricey?). I imagine that it would cost quite a bit to have the engine opened up and looked at (rings/valves?)

It has just passed its MOT...no issues raised with emissions surprisingly.

How many miles per liter? The thing is, a liter a week may or may not be excessive depending on how many miles you drive.

 

Well it's only used to ferry the little ones around, so 50-100 miles a week maybe?

 

My U.S. brain doesn't always wrap around the metric system easily, but your oil consumption is excessive. If your not leaking it out, there is only one other place it can be lost, right out the tailpipe.

I'm sure you could better weigh the cost of buying bulk oil versus repair or replacement of the engine. Personally, I would vote towards repair. There is no way of determining what is wrong until you have it checked and priced, and I've never seen a consumption problem just go away. Sooner or later, something will give out and then your stuck. Might even be something with the PCV sucking oil, then your off cheap.
