Default engine trouble

my mx5 broke down almost 10 weeks ago,had to get a tow to a garage.was told my cylinder head was gone,it was sent to be skimmed and i paid a bill of £820.after several promises of delivery ,the garage informed me that the car was still not working,it was losing pressure from the bottom end? they sent the engine away again, and once more have informed me that the problem persists.i have now been told it needs a new engine at a fitted price of £2000.in the meantime i have had no car,and made 3 finance payments and i just wondered if it sounds like the affair has been badly handled,in particular, should the new engine diagnosis have been made prior to the 2 failed repair attempts.end of tether ,thanks for any advice
