Default 2007 Mazda5 compatability question.

I have a knock in my engine, so I went to the auto wrecker looking for a replacement engine, they said only 2006 and 2007 engines are compatible with it. WTF? The 2.3 is in a LOT of Mazda cars, vans, soccer-mom mobiles...what is it about my 2007 2.3L that is so special it is only in 2 years of the Mazda5?
Signed,
Perplexed...lol
😕

2007 appears to be the facelift.

Is your engine fly by wire or throttle cable? There are minor changes with the engines, from memory the position of the oil dipstick moved. Possible camshaft changes ???

I don't think we have fly by wire in Canada. While that is a prolific engine compatibility is always fleeting and hard to nail down.
