I just got a Mazda 3 hatchback. The front passenger airbag shows that it's turned off when my daughter sits in the seat. She is 5'2", 103 lbs. That's a full grown human. Does anyone know how much the the weight of the passenger has to be to activate the airbag?

I'd think it would activate with that. I once tried my 6 y/o nephew's car seat there with him in it (had two other kids in the back) and it was activated with him. Figure 45 lbs of kid plus another 5 of seat. Perhaps it's that the carseat was very firmly installed and covered a large foot print vs. a petite child.
