what does this do?

there is what looks to be some kind of plug to the left of the steering wheel, underneath the rolling dial to adjust the brightness of the dash lighting. does anyone know what this plug does?

I've been wondering what that was too and I believe its something the dealer uses to check your ECU or something. I think this is where I found information on that.
