So, my Check Engine light came on. I know these lights can sometimes pop on for no reason, so I proceeded to disconnect the battery to reset it. Good news is the light has not come back on.

The battery is nicely enclosed in plastic housing to keep it clean, etc. However, there is some rather elaborate venting that seems to be designed to direct a stream of air from the front grill into the battery box.

I understand there would be a need to vent the battery box, because you don't want possibly explosive gas to accumulate. Having said this,the system seems to be a little overkill. Are there other reasons why there would be a need to push a large volume of fresh air into the battery box?

 

Here's a quote from the service manual:

"Air that passes through the battery duct when the vehicle is moving is used to cool the battery, preventing battery degradation from the heat made by chemical reaction, improving reliability. "

Wow! I was wondering the same thing. I was going to take all the plastic out and get ride of it. Dont see why u really need it though. My jetta's batteryis covered and no problems.
all that plastic gets old and cracks after awhile.
