Default Rotten Egg Smell

Our 3i (2010) with the 2.0 is giving off an occasional rotten egg smell. The dealer service tech says it is "normal" and it is just "the catalytic converter burning off carbon".

Anyone else have this problem or know anything about emissions issues with the 3?

Sometimes it's bad gas as sulphur is in fuel. It could also be a misfire, but you would get a flshing cel or code.

1. Use gas from a different gas station.
2. Don't take such short trips. If you have to take short trips, make sure you let the engine warm up from normal driving, but don't leave it idling for a long time. If you know you are going to leave it idling for more than 2 minutes for any reason, turn the car off.
3. Don't accelerate hard, especially when engine is cold.
4. Put in some good fuel system cleaner like Redline

Thanks for the reply. Most trips with this car are longer, but lots of idling in traffic. I will try the fuel system cleaner, but basically the service tech believes nothing is wrong. I've never heard of this being considered normal before.
