Default Oil Pan Threads - Please Help

I've had my oil changed by one of those quick change shops for years, but after getting it changed last Friday I discovered a leak. I took it back to the shop and they said the threads in the oil pan drain were "worn out" and so they had to put a "longer" plug in.
Then they showed me the old plug (pictured below.) I have my opinions about what happened here, but I would like to hear from other owners about whether or not they have had problems with the pan's drain plug threads wearing out.
Please tell me what you think.

2007 Mazda 3 2.0 sedan (stock)

That's what I thought. A guy at the shop they only hand tighten the drain plug.

Has anyone had their threads just wear out?
