Default Mazda 3 manual to power steering conversion

Hi Everyone!
I am going to buy a used mazda 3 2010 in Costa Rica. I love the car, how it drives and looks. The only problem is that the car has a manual steering! The owner says that the car is a Japanese version and it came with a manual steering. I find it hard to use the steering, the owner says it will cost around 600 dollars to convert it to power steering and he will discount that price on the car. Do any of you have any idea if it can actually be converted and if so how much will it cost? Please help!

Btw the steering wheel even has audio controls etc! I wonder how it came with a manual steering!

A few comments:
  • Never heard of a manual steering Mazda3; that said, I've had several cars in the past which didn't have power assist, and, with the exception of parallel parking, I much prefer cars with no assist.
  • Back in that era Mazda had an issue with the electric/hyduralic hybrid power assist in that the assist would fail on a somewhat regular basis. I don't know of the 2010 models were so afflicted, but if they were, it could be the car you're looking at actually has power assist which simply isn't working.
  • Upgrading from a non-power assist to a power assist steering system sounds like it would cost a heck of a lot more than $600; the only way I can envision such an upgrade costing so little is if you source the parts from a junk yard and did all of the work yourself.

Thank you for replying. The owner says it definitely came as a manual from the factory and he also claims to be a mechanic. He says he asked in a mazda showroom about the conversion and they told him it costs about 600-700$. The problem is today is Sunday and the showrooms are closed, the guy wants to sell it urgently because he is moving to a different place tomorrow. I really like the car except that my girlfriend won't be able to drive it with a manual steering, that's a deal breaker.

Something smells about this deal. I HIGHLY recommend you move on to a different car.

I fully agree with this ^^^^^^^^^^ statement, I think you need to get away from this deal as fast as possible Nitheesh Reddy, or it will most probably end up costing you a lot more than 600 in the long run.
