Default Mazda 3 bumper

I wanted to change my mazda 3 2018 GT rear bumper . It’s metallic grey. The showroom near me said they can get the mazda oem part and have to paint it to nearest matching colour by 95%. They said they can coat only plastic grey and not metallic grey as we get that only with the car. Is it true mazda showroom body shops cannot get metallic grey paint to the bumpers. If so what is the process. Thanks in advance. Your inputs are much appreciated

I suggest you go elsewhere. 95% is not good enough. Yes that paint code is hard to complete, but its not impossible.

I'm not a body shop expert, only basing my comments on my experience in the automotive industry, & working for Mazda.

It's not a conventional paint, nor a conventional way of applying paint. The only way of painting a bumper is at a body shop, that's exactly where your dealer will get it painted.

You can't buy a pre-painted bumper from Mazda. Not all body shops have the equipment/technology/skills/training to apply this type of paint.

Your dealer is talking crap.

The following is regarding soul red metalic paint, but its the same for your paint.

The Depth and Vidiness achieved by Soul Red Metallic is a result of the three (3) layers used in this colour, i.e. clear coat (top coat), coloured clear coat, and basecoat containing aluminum flake. The repairability and refinishing quality has been validated in collaboration with major paint suppliers, using the materials currently available in the marketplace. Soul Red Metallic can be refinished using basecoats either water based or solvent based. The refinishing procedure of Soul Red Metallic is the same as that used for Tri-coat Pearl Paint finishes. For the colour formula and/or the detailed paint procedure please contact PPG or an authorized PPG repairer.

I agree with Grim on this one. Find someone who knows what they are doing.

It is possible that the "95%" comment was because the bumper requires a flex additive for the paint on the bumper that the metal body panels do not get. This can cause the bumpers to be slightly duller than the rest if not done perfectly. I would not expect a dealer to do it perfectly. Only a good professional body shop can do it right.

The worst scenario is someone matches the paint perfectly but does not use the flex additive. That means as soon as you bend the bumper a little...crack!...the paint comes off in chunks.

Just keep this in mind.

Thanks!!! I left the vehicle with a authorized body shop the dealer suggested since it covers my warranty.
