Default Mazada Speed3 Oil filter

Well I just changed my oil with Mobil 1 Full Synthetic. Bought the filter and it was a cartridge filter...I was like...WTF is this.

Well I researched a bit and read that a lot of people hate the cartridge filters.

Well. I think they are not thinking clearly. I loved it. Was fun to deal with and like that you can drain the cartridge before removing the bottom. Made it MUCH cleaner!!!!

End the hate on Cartridge Oil Filters!!!

It's really not all that bad. It can be a little messier, and of course you have to clean out the housing.

Drac, check out eBay. There are/is a seller that has them in bulk, usually a 2-6 ea lot. I just recently bought 4 for $20 including the shipping and they are OE Mazda too.

I read elsewhere on the internet that if you buy and install a kit, then you can use a spin on filter on the 2.3.

http://www.mazda3forums.com/index.php?topic=30450.0

I'm happy I havea 2.0 with a spin-on filter.

A cartridge filter? The point of having a cartridge filter system is ... ??Does Mazda not have engineers that graduated college after 1955?Do the owners of the 2.3 need tocall up Arthur Fonzarelliwhenever they need an oil change?

Benefits of the cartridge filter = none. Nothing about the cartridge filter makes for better oil filtering.

And since the cartridge filter is an oddity, you are stuck doing it yourself, or always having to go toa Mazda dealership (I wouldn't trust the dude at grease monkey to know how to handle it ... that is, if grease monkey even stocks the filter cartridge).

BMW and MB ... nice cars, designs that make me drool ... but according to consumer reports and others, they are no longer world-leading in terms ofreliability.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the cartridge style filter. The reason ppl dont like it is because its harder to source the filer element. Most average o=joe can go to his local pep boys and pick up a fram or something and spin that on there, but you cant do the with the cratridge.

But why would they chose one or the other? Does one actually/truly work better? I hear no all the time...
