Angry Manual shift **** falling apart = $500?

A few days ago I was driving my 2012 Mazda3 and the **** fell apart in my hand. The top plastic part has basically peeled down and away. It seems like there is a screw that broke or something, but the cloth that attaches it to the rest of the plastic seems like this is not an easy repair.

The dealer quoted me $500 to repair.

Does anyone have any help they can offer? Any TSBs or anything else I can try? The car isn’t under any warranty anymore.

Thanks in advance!

Seriously, $500 for a manual shift ****? Try the parts department of a different dealership. Most shift ***** for manual transmission vehicles are easily removed and replaced, that said, I've never looked at the one on the Gen 2 Mazda3.

I tried to unscrew it but it seemed really tight. But can someone confirm that the 2012s just unscrew? If so, I'll buy a new **** on eBay and be on my way...

Check for a "set screw".

I confirmed that I can just unscrew it, and it is just the shift **** that is falling apart.

The list price for the new **** is $350 but I can find it online at one of the Mazda dealers for $250

You can also buy aftermarket units for well under $100.

Actually the online Mazda dealer price of $250 was for the 2.5L M/T. I only have the 2.0L so the shiftknob is only $38.

Ahhh, I'm guessing the $250 price tag was for the automatic transmission.
