Default Issues removing old ECT sensor.

Hello every one, so this is my first post on here. I bought a used 2004 Model 3 few days ago and have started doing a basic tune up for it. My CEL came on day after I got it with code P0126. I know this to be a coolant temp error so I decided to put in a new ECT. As I went to take out the old one I noticed that the plastic housing for the plug is a larger diameter then the nut. The part of the housing that is causing the problem could be removed with a razor but I'm not sure if I should or not. Any advice on how to get this bad boy out without breaking anything would be awesome.
