Based on your description of the situation, I concur. It sounds like the pads are "rattlin'" around in the calipers. When you step on the brake pedal it stops because the pads are contacting the rotors and don't have the opportunity to rattle between the loose caliper (which is no longer loose) and rotors spinning beneath them.

Do your rear pads have spring clips fitted? Some aftermarket pads do, some do not.
