I don't find gas mileage is speed dependent as much as it is RPM dependent. I find I get the best mileage whenI can keep theRPMs running constantin the2700-2800 range. And from a performance point of view, the engine seems to like this RPM range.

A lot ofdrivers over-shift ... in fact, the auto I have tends to overshift. In the city, I do better when I use the sport shift and prevent the overshifting.

How much do you think overshifting is?

With the 2.0, I have a 4 speed auto. If I leave it in D, it will shift itself into 4th gear (the top gear)somewhere in the 35-40 mph range. The rpms are barely above 2000after this happens. Acceleration is mediocre, and fuel economy suffers also. I think I can punch mpg up by about 2 mpg by judiciously shifting using the tiptronic.

The key is watching the tach. Its easy. Punch it down a gear when the rpms fall close to 2000. Punch it up when the rpms approach 3000. Yes, you have the torque converter in play, and it will not feel liketrue manual. But this is good, as a true manual can feel jerky.

I have a 2.3L w/ a manual and my gas mileage isnt all that great. I do about 2/3 freeway and I am getting 26MPG MAX (going only 65 on freeway). I am using my trip computer on my GT so its most likely pretty accurate. I have found if I am a little spunky in my driving, my gas mileage drops down to about 22 MPG. I tried 91 octance for two tanks, but I found no noticeable change in performace or gas mileage. I have found that finding alternative routes home that have 50mph limits with few lights really increase my mpg.
I would not have dug this up except fort that is you figure your mileage out the old fashion way (dividing the miles by gallons) over the trip computer it might be different. My trip computer has been at least 2 miles per gallon to low for the past 3 tanks. The more hills you go down with the Current MPG at 99.9 the more it is off according to the Service department at my Stealership (the computer figures at 99.9 while you might be getting 110).

Then again they are still trying to figure out how I got the trip computer on the S [8D]

BTW, last tank is at 30.1 on the Trip, all highway between 60 and 78.

That ain't bad for an auto. Curious about normal/city driving though. That's where the ATX (usually) seems to fall on it's face mileage wise.

With my Commute, which is 60% highway and 40% city first tank was 26.008MPG, last one before the weekend was a tad under 28MPG.
I still think it is breaking in, since right now it has about 1600 miles on it

Ah! I forgot. You have the 5-sp ATX too, don't you? That should improve the mileage a bit.
I didn't see any real changes in mileage after "break-in." Mine has always gotten around 26-28mpg driving back and forth to work.
I did notice an improvement in mileage while using the A/C however. It used to drop several MPG during the summer month around here. I'm not sure what to attribute that too, expect perhaps the exhaust, timing mod and intake mods I had done had something to do with it?

Ah, you don't know about the timing mod yet, do you Siber? Here ya' go!!
