airbag question

Default airbag question

so i turn on my mazda 3 with a passenger in the car and everytime i turn on the ignition it says passenger airbag off by the lighter for like 3 seconds then the light goes off is this normal?

OK Lev... I'll take it from here.
The seat has a weight sensor. The air bags are second gen which basically means that under a certain weight (I think it's 85-90lbs, iirc) the RS air bag is disabled for safety, even though someone is sitting in that seat.
I think it's also activated by the seat belt being connected, as I sometimes carry my coffee thermos and lunch pack there with the belt connected to hold it in and the light reacts the same way only it will stay on until the seat belt is released to indicate the bag being deactivated.
If the sensor detects more weight, like the weight of an average sized adult or greater, the light will go offafter it's+/-3 secs test.
