Default 3-Sport Shattering Sunroof

I was driving and out of the blue there wasa VERY loud "pop" and when I looked at my sunroof it was completely shattered and bowing outwards! A very frightening sound indeed! I've got no idea why... I checked immediately after it happened and there was no visible markings of something hitting it andtemperature was warm (7C). Outside of the car looking at it, it's all bowed like a dome... very bizarre to see. So glad it was tempered glass!

I've read about other manufacturers having this happen (Toyota-Scion and Jaguar X) and was wondering if anyone has heard of Mazda having this problem and if the warranty covered it. In the Jag's case, it was NOT covered.

Thanks.

Shan, by any chance did u have the sunroof tinted ? There is something called I believe thermal breakage when you tint them the heat gets trapped and causes them sometimes to blow out .

Man....turn your stereo down

This is the first I've heard of a sunroof spontaneously breaking.

Blowing out is usually caused by excessive pressure built up inside the car's interior. It used to happen occasionally to older cars whenall the windows and ventilation system were closed and it was left parked in the sun too long. But in a modern car that's all but been eliminated.

You don't by any chance do a lot of driving on the moon, do you? Or fly the car at high altitudes?

Weird, but I'm sure there's a reasonable explaination for it.

Oddly enough... yes the sunroof is tinted (original from Mazda). But temp wise, it was cool outside and the car had just been started after sitting in a mall parking lot (cool inside). When I took it to the service dept, the mgr totally thought I was "pulling a fast one" and didn't believe me. He (and a few buds) came out for a look and it blew their minds. They had never heard of it happening.

Long story short, they had no explanation for me and after inspecting it came to the conclusion that it was not caused by something hitting it. Totally, 100%, covered by warranty!! YAY!!!!!!!
