2006 Mazda 3 2.3L automatic transmission issues
Hey guys! (120k miles)
My boyfriend's mazda 3 has been nothing but troublesome out of no where. I was driving on the highway when out of no where it felt like we hit a pothole, yet the road was smooth. I looked at the gauge cluster and noticed the "AT" and the check engine light was on. The check engine light stayed on along with the AT light which would go away after a while then the car would jerk and go to AT again... Also the PRND column on the gauge cluster would also flicker and then go away, along with it showing what gear it was.
So this is where it gets interesting.
We found online that it is most likely the TCM and it is going bad. We found on ebay of a guy that fixes the mazda 3 TCM and we sent it out to them. We get it back a week later and the check engine light and the AT light was off -- Awesome! Then fast forward two days (today) as he was getting gas the car yet again slipped going 40mph in 5th gear. The strange thing about it this time is that the check engine didn't come on, though the AT light came on for a split second every time the transmission would slip. Then it would go back to normal and then 3 minutes later do it again with the AT light on for half a second then act totally normal again -- again no check engine light as well. I also put the car in accessory mode to see if the check engine light works, and it does work. Also the gauge cluster didn't have the PRND display go out again - so its a little different this time.
Should I be looking at sensors at this point? I'm not sure why its doing it again and not giving off any codes. There is also no specks in the transmission fluid, although it is a little brown. I am going to change the transmission fluid, but at 110k miles I think its a normal color considering my 01' mercury grand marquis had much darker fluid with no issues.
Also forgot to mention - I didn't get a copy of the codes when it happened the first time.
Any recommendations would be awesome! Thanks!
