Steering knock - Mazda 2 (DL 2015): advice needed
Hi
I bought a Mazda 2 (2015 DL) with 55,000km from a private seller in Australia. Car is immaculate and not driven into the ground and has been fully serviced at Mazda dealers.
The steering wheel has a "knock" feeling when turning (i can feel it at low speed - e.g. when parking).
I took it to Mazda and they said the ''steering column" needs replacing and its a $3000+ job. The dealer contact Mazda Australia immediately (without me asking) and put in a goodwill claim which was rejected.
I then took the car past 2 independent steering specialists. Both did some tests and said it is likely the 'intermediate' shaft which is $350 + labour. They also said this is a common issue with these cars.
Just wondering if anyone has experience this and what they did.
I find it odd that Mazda say the whole steering shaft needs replacing - surely a 6 year old, low mileage car with full Mazda service history should not have every component of the shaft fail?
Plus, I assume the Mazda dealer was equally surprised given they went straight to a goodwill claim with Mazda Australia - they too did not expect this on this vehicle.
Has anyone had success with a claim like this - my issue is car was always serviced at Mazda and they are supposed to check steering components at a service, which I bet did not happen. This does not just fail overnight.
Any thoughts or comments welcome.
Thanks

1. Mazda 2 is almost the same as Ford Fiesta MK6 - recently I even bought Engine Mount for my 2011 Mazda 2 listed to fit into Ford Fiesta and it FITS!
2. Just youtube it - you will LEARN that NOTHING is damaged in steering column!!!!! The reason you have no play in joints - so whats the problem!? GREASE DRIED - crazy thing is - it is kind of DIY and kind of simple thing to fix - BUT - you need to have GOOD grease - applied it correctly (on the top of bar as it slides into hole) and REMEMBER no moving steering wheel when removing that bar (sellotape it to column)
3. I have same problem in my 2011 Mazda 2
