Default Lost all mazda remotes

Hi

My New Zealand New 2014 Mazda 2 car has a key with remote buttons and a normal key. My wife lost the key with remote buttons, so we just have the basic key (no buttons)

I've been able to clone the transponder chip in the existing key using a X-Horse VVDI Mini Key Tool (https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/32996626264.html) that someone leant me.

I would also like to have a functioning remote with buttons. I can correctly put the car in the correct mode to program additional button remotes (ignition x3 -> door x3) however there is no response from the car when I push the new remote button. I suspect you need an existing working remote button to program additional remotes?

Thanks
Mike

I should say the sequence I use is.

1. open car door and leave open
2. insert key and turn to on to off three times, leave key in ignition
3. close + open the door x3 , leave door open
4. the car responds by locking and unlocking itself once
5. press button twice on remote (unfortunately nothing happens, it is supposed to lock and unlock)

When finishing the car is supposed to automatically locks and unlocks itself three times (this step does happen), which makes me know that I am following the steps correctly.

I just want to figure out if I have a dud remote, or it just won't work because you need to use a working remote first before adding the additional remotes.
