Default Heater issue and the mysterious “clunk”

The cabin heater on my 2010 Mazda 2 is behaving oddly and as we are coming into winter (we’ll, what the Australians call winter!) I was hoping someone might be able to help.

The fan seems to work okay and blows strongly but it only blows cold air; whatever the temperature setting is. The only way to get hot air through is to put the fan up to full, drive at a reasonable speed and break hard... you then hear a clunk from in behind the dash and the hot air kicks in!

I’ve not had any issues with the engine overheating and not noticed any leaks which I understand can be an issue with the heating systems.

Any help appreciated.

Climate AC or manual twisty dials?

Might need to poke your head up under the dash & see if the temp flap actuator or cable is fully attatched.

Manual twisty dials.

Popped my head under and didn’t see anything obvious. But difficult to see much without a bit of digging around.
