Hey all hope y’all are doing well, I’m looking for a spot of advice. I bought a 2018 Mazda 2 while I was in Puerto Rico two years ago, and I imported it to the States last year because I am an idiot. It was surprisingly easy to register my car in Texas but it was a little harder to find insurance. At any rate I got it sorted and I’ve been enjoying the hell out of it. I usually do my own oil changes but I recently moved and didn’t have my tools so I went to a dealership after a couple local shops refused to touch it.
It took some effort for the service manager to trick the computer into letting him work on it but he mentioned off hand that they are unable to source parts for it. I tried poking around some JDM parts websites but I couldn’t find anything for the 2 on there. I’m getting worried that I’m in over my head in terms of eventual maintenance and that maybe my insurance will drop me if I get into an accident as maybe they didn’t realize my car is imported. I didn’t lie on my insurance but still getting new bodywork might be impossible or infeasible so it might be pretty easy to total.
I thought about selling it but it’s a really esoteric car all things considered so I’m not sure I could get much for it. That being said maybe it would go to a home more deserving of it. Perhaps an auction? Right now it’s my daily driver and it’s starting to accumulate miles.
Do y’all have any advice on sourcing parts? What would you do in my shoes?
Sounds like you need a dealership that doesn't have their head stuck up their ****.
Isn't Puerto Rico a US territory? They should be able to enter your VIN/Chassis number into their EPC ( Electronic Parts Catalog) failing that they can send the info to Mazda USA & they will have acess to the EPC for other countries/markets.
I don't think you will have any issues getting parts.

Does Mazda sell the Mazda 2 in the USA?
Forgot to add that they stopped selling the Mazda2 in the USA in 2015 or 2016, which is the crux of the problem for the dealerships I think. The only dealership I could find that was able to run the VIN struggled for a while. They made some calls to Mazda USA higher up the food chain and they were pretty pessimistic on the ability to get parts since it’s not supposed to be in this market.
First. It is not imported. PR is the United States. It is completely legal to own in most States. Not sure about CA emissions.
Second, you should not have any problem getting parts from a Toyota dealer! The Mazda2 was sold in the States in 2016 as the Scion iA, 2017 as the Yaris iA Sedan and now as the Yaris sedan and hatchback. The only difference should be the front end grill and some trim.
A local neighborhood mechanic should have no problem working on it if you tell them it is a Yaris.
I have a Scion iA for my kids and thought about having a Mazda2 shipped up for myself. The Mazda2 front end looks much better. I would only want some more power.
Enjoy your Mazda2 and let me know if you ever decide to sell. I am not ready to buy now but I may be ready when you are.
