Default Tribute 2003 keyless entry range

The range on my original, dealer supplied keyless entry has always been kind of short. Maybe ten yards or so. Fob batteries have full capacity. Are there any strategies for increasing the range? Are there key fobs I could buy that would have better range than the fob supplied with the vehicle?

"If" my memory serves me correct there was a short bit wire on the back of the ECU (the car computer) wiring harness which i think was a short antenna , i noticed it when i fitted a new double din shortwave radio , one could see it with the radio out .
The ecu is below and center of the windscreen , one can see it at center with the hood up , yours could be curled up? instead of elongated .

OR it was down near the ignition switch? as i had to pull the gauges to replace the bulb for the LCD odometer display , i have forgotten but the 1st guess is up near the ECU itself .

I get 20m distance (60feet) regularly .

No short wires sticking out of the ECU. All connections to the ECU are securely bundled and tied. The only unbundled cable coming out of it is a 2-wire to ground.
