Power steering fluid type for ES V6?
I see in the manual that it says to add MERCON fluid. Is that just Ford's brand, or is it a different type than others like GM use? At the local parts store, they did not have any MERCON type fluid. The Valvolene says its compatible with Ford, GM, Chrysler.

Well, I at least got some responses to this question from my old BMW forum. It looks like the PS fluid is the same as MERCON automatic transmission fluid. Can anyone confirm this?
Thanks

I just did a quick search and found that AAMOC, Valvoline and Pennzoil all make a transmission fluid that is Meron and Dexron compliant. Seems to be very common, I do not understand why your parts store does not carry it. I have owned Fords for many years and Mercon has been the fluid of choice for all of them. I think you should try another store.
The fluid could be used for power steering but the AAMCO site specifically states that the auto manufacturer may specify a specific fluid for their PS systems for various reasons. Pennzoil and Valvoline do not mention the use in PS systems.
I would put in only what the owners manual states.

Thanks, I guess I was just trying to understand that there's not Mercon ATF and Mercon PS Fluid. They are one in the same. I have not owned a Ford or GM since '82.
