Ignition Switch - No Start
My 2008 Tribute has difficulty starting. Usually takes several turns of key to be able to hit the start portion of switch. Mechanic replaced ignition switch 2 -3 years ago, but the problem slowly came back. I suspect now that the key barrel has worn inside and there is enough play in there where it can't turn the ignition switch enough to start car. I currently have the ignition switch hanging out and once the key is inserted in the column, I can start the car using a screwdriver to turn the ignition switch. Not a good system.
Somewhere online I read where cost to replace whole system on steering column at dealer is $1000 - $1400. (Have to remove steering wheel and airbag) Almost more than car is now worth. There's a Youtube video where a mechanic claims to have fixed the problem by cutting away some plastic edges off the ignition switch so that the switch can be inserted in the column in a slightly rotated angle that insures the key will be able to turn the swtich enough to start.
It's a crazy idea - even uses a drywall screw to secure switch position.
Has anyone heard of this approach? What are the downsides? What do you think my other options might be for this car?
