Default Grinding bearings when stopping?

My 2004 Ttibute makes grinding, crunching noises coming from the front end while stopping. It's not the front brakes - checked the rotors and pads which are fine. It doesn't do it all the time, but it seems to occur most often while stopping from a higher speed drive. It doesn't happen in reverse, and it sounds like it is coming from the bottom center of the front end. I am truly befuddled as to what this could be, because pulling and twisting on the axle and joints don't produce the same noises. Can anybody give me a clue?

Have you checked the wheel bearings?
