Default Check Engine Light and Check Fuel Cap Light

Hello all,
I have a 2002 Mazda Tribute 2.0l 4cyl. Both the Check Engine Light and Check Fuel Cap light are on. It runs a little rough but when i turn the A/C on, the RPMs drop and it will die when i come to a stop unless i turn the A/C off. I replaced the gas cap and the canister purge valve. The lights are still on and it is still running the same. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Before throwing parts at it, scan it for fault codes.

If your car is otherwise running well and your check engine light illuminates, remove your gas cap and put it back on turning until you hear 3 or 4 clicks. Depending on your make and model, the light should turn off after 100 miles or so. A loose gas cap prevents the fuel system from properly pressurizing. A super easy fix that is often not mentioned in owner's manuals snaptube vidmate. Also don't forget many auto parts stores check codes for FREE!

100 miles? I was told 10 miles and the light would go out if the cap solved my check engine light problem. My code was po 456. I have no noticeable symptoms.

OMG where do you all get your tech info from, oh wait the internet and other DIYs.

The MYTH started a couple decades or more ago having to do more with simpler emission system and needing to get emission tested for registration or sales purposes. Sometime (not always) a short drive would turn off the dash light. Most emission testing is now done by direct connection to the OBDII diagnostic connector so you can't do that cheat anymore. Newer ECU it takes "DRIVE CYCLES" not so much as miles. A drive cycle is one complete cool down like when you park for the evening and then the next day start and drive normally. Many problems will take from 1-5 drive cycles depending on what solution fix was. Often times shops will turn off or what is call clear the code(s) that will turn off the dash light if they know that they were successful at the service repair. This does not mean the ECU has established the problem as gone and will remain in permanent file until drive cycles are accomplished at that time if no more problem the ECU will not reactivate the engine check light.

Not concerned about emissions testing, at least not yet. Emission testing here is now done by driving past one or more mobile testing stations that can monitor emissions even if the driver doesn't notice them. Annually or biannually as applicable, we go to state website and pay for the inspection. If vehicle too old, we have to go to a brick-and-mortar station for testing.

my last response was about the MYTH ….go re-read it 😉

as for your year Mazda , you might want to recheck how your type emission is tested. You may not have it correct for your Mazda ?😎

My extended family has 3 vehicles, 2 are GM products 2019 and 2022, and are definitely handled by the mobile stations. As for the Mazada, my SIL handles that and motor vehicle history shows the Mazda has had past Rapid Pass (mobile stations using infrared sensors) emission inspections. That said, the list of eligible vehicles changes quarterly. It's inspection due in August this year. Thanks for the help.

I AM NOT COMPLETELY UP ON ALL THE STATES EMISSION REQUIREMENTS. i DO KNOW THAT COST WISE THE USE OF OBDii DIRECT ACCESS IS THE BEST TESTING PROCEDURE. i WAS UNTIL THE END OF LAST YEAR CERTIFIDE TO PERFORM CALIFORNIA EMISSION TESTING AND HAVE BEEN SUCH FOR A COUPLE OF DECADES BUT BECAUSE THEY REQUIRE INDEPENDENT SHOPS NOW TO HAVE THE LATEST TEST EQUIPMENT AT THE CAOST OF 5-7K MANY SHOPS DECLINE TO KEEP THIER TESTING LICENCE WITH THE STATE.

SORRY ABOUT THE CAPS BUT I MA SITTING IN MY DENTIST OFFICE AND USEING MY CELL AND JUST NOTICED IT WAS SET ON CAPS AND WAS NOT GOING TO RE-WRITE THIS RESPONSE! LOL

MY WHOLE POINT IS THAT YOU WILL NOT PASS YOUR STATES EMISSION IF ANY OF THE I/D MONITORS ARE NOT ALL IN GREEN! AND IF THEY ARE AT FAULT THEN I CAN GARANTEE YOUR EMISSION ARE HIGHER AND LIKELY WOULD NOT PASS A DRIVE BY SNIFFER TEST EITHER.

FOR ALL READING WHY DO YOU ALL KEEPO COMPARING OTHER VEHICLES WITH YOUR NEW MAZDA (APROX.2019 +/-1-3 YEARS) TO PRESENT) IN ANY REGARDS? THE ENGINEERED DRIVETRAIN IS UNIQUE ONLY TO MAZDA. AN ANOLOGY WOULD BE COMAPRING VETABLES TO ROCKS! LOL

I understand and will make sure everything good to go for emissions testing. (I was at Dentist yesterday, good news: as usual no problems and insurance covered everything).
