Default Air Conditioning Vent

The air conditioning vent on the driver's side of my 2003 Tribute has just broken. The slider (top arrow) does not move anything. It appears that a piece has broken or fall off and is lying next to the bottom arrow. How can I take the vent out to repair it?

Ihave the same problem on the driver side and I would like to know also, in the mean time I use my key to move the vent in the right position until i forget and i close it again.
