I will preface this by saying I am new here and I can only assume you get this question constantly, but is my mechanic screwing me?

This morning I got a call asking me to bring my spare key in because they were going to need to reprogram both keys. This afternoon I got a call from them telling me how much this was going to cost.

I asked for a breakdown of the numbers and this is what I was told:

Labor: $212.50
Tow: $65
Diagnostic scan: $65
Spare key: $142
Reprogramming key: $85
Picking new key up from dealer: $35
Administrative fees: 3%
State taxes: 5.5%

I am frustrated because I have no idea if these people are trying to take advantage of the situation. Does the anti-theft system even go haywire like this without there being a larger, underlying issue?
