Default 2004 Mazda Tribute LX V6 stuck in park

My Tribute won't shift into any gears but I can manually depress a lever on top of the steering column and it releases something that enables it to shift out of park and into gear.My brake lights work, would anyone know what this problem might be?Thanks in advance for any reply's to help me trouble shoot this problem.

There might be a second switch on the brake pedal that actuates the interlock solenoid, have a look under the dash

Thanks for your reply simonsi, looked for some kind of switch,no such luck.A bunch of wires and connectors, made sure every thing was connected.I was hoping that some one with a Tribute had this problem and would have an answer to make this an easy fix for me.One trouble shoot down,I'm hoping that some one knows the answer to my question.Let keep the reply's coming,it's much appreciated.

I have a Tribute but I can't see a seperate switch but the interlock is definitely driven off the brake pedal - mine has the column shifter, is your column or floor shift?

There is a dedicated fuse for the interlock listed, #32 in lists Google finds not sure if that is in the under-bonnet fuse/relay box or more likely in the left side footwell fusebox. Seems there is a single Brake Pedal Position Switch that drives the interlock and the brake lights.

I have a column shifter,I'll check out those fuses tomorrow in the day light.I'm determined to trouble shoot this problem with the help of people like yourself and other's on this Tribute forum.I was hoping that there would be a mechanic in this forum that know's of this problem and would have a quick answer, but things aren't always as easy as I would hope they could be.
