RX8 - ONE BIG PIECE OF CRAP
I got an 04 6 speed loaded but no GT package. suede seats, no bodykit, small lip spoiler. I worked in a service dept. for a linc.merc. dealer and it caught my eye. I bought it for 15K and it was needing a slave/throwout setup when it came in from an auction. apparently the engine had been replaced, at 2.5K miles. It just turned 50K when I got it. No issues as of yet except for 100+ degree heat broke the checklinks on my driver side visor. easy fix. the checklink on the driver door is pathetic and only holds the door open at full open, unless positioned slowly. It apparently likes to sip Mobil 1 while chugging 93 octane. I get about 200 miles on a tank but most of that is the stop and go commute to/from work 20 miles a day.
I have 44k miles on my 6spd 06' and haven't had a tick yet. Although sorry and worried to read about all of these problems. I had a 2nd Gen rx-7 in high school that required virtually no major repairs in all 3 years I owned it. So far so good with my 8. One thing I may add though, the guy I bought my Rx-7 from told me that rotarys require more frequent oil changes, especially as mileage increases. I'm not a mechanic, nor even that knowledgable of cars, but it may be what's been keepin my mazda sports cars runnin clean. I drive my car year round in Chicago, soit sees pleanty of weather. The only reason I would tell somebody not to buy an Rx-8, is because I like it when everybody's lookin at me in mine.
I'd like to add. The 6 speed seems a bit different from other 6 speeds i've drivin, new/worn clutch having no factor, it's just different. I was thinking it may just be the stick, it's short and stubby almost like a short throw but not really a short throw. My rx-7 had a longer stick with less throw than the one on the 8. Took a while to get used to it, especially going from 4th to 5th, what a pain... With the distance the stick has to travel, i'd almost rather have a longer stick for more leverage/ease. Although at that point I might as well just get an actual aftermarket short throw shifter.
I just went on this forum to check something out and started reading this message and had to register just to stick up for the rx8 cause i bought a used 2004 8 with 47000 miles on it and it now has over 50000 miles and have not had one problem with it and i have installed aftermarket products the 8 has been very reliable for me i just think that the previous owners must have beat the **** out of the car or something
I Have To Concur With Your Thoughts. I'm A Mechanic By Trade And Must Say For A New Car It's Innovative And Its Design Is A Marvel. I Also Have Two Young-uns And Am Very Impressed With That Rear Seat. A Sports Car, With Room For The Ankle-biters... Brilliant.
Hmmmm, recently bought an 04 RX8 and in less than 20k have had to have a new engine and now for the second time in less than 10k miles my throw out bearing seems to be going out so....I love my baby but this is killing me. My first gen RX7 was much more reliable than the 8 has been.
