Default where to start?

hey guys. my father gave me his 1979 rx-7. itssitting in my garage and it has been sitting with minimal starts for the past 10 years. i am thinking i may want to get it running once again. i do not know much about rotary engines but i do have my fathers knowledge to refer to. we had it started last year to move it and in the process had sparks flying from under the hood.

that being said are there many 1st gen owners on this site? i trieda search but did not come up with much. i would really like to get this carrestored and possibly turbo it. it seems like a decent winter project. any opinions, advice, or other would be greatly appreciated. where do i start?

Post pics of your ride. Try doing visual inspection of the car first. Replace watever needs replacing to start. Hoses, rusted parts, may even new harness wires.

thank you for your response. i pulled it out of the garage today. i checked the fluids and hoses, and most of the wiring. turned the key and nothing. i jumpedthe battery and it started right up. ran pretty rough for a while and smoked like a bitch. the smoke calmed down but never completely stopped. battery was no good so i replaced it and some fuses. it will now start up, run, idle, and restart. i talked to my father about the smoke and he tells me it most likely has bad side seals. so im looking into an engine rebuild or possibly a swap as i originally said. any good recomendations on that would be great. any good aftermarket or oem (ha i doubt it) engine and interior part distributors. i am trying to get this car back to stock, then possibly improve from there. it needs a good cleaning, some body work, some minor interior fixes, and of course the engine. this will be a hell of a winter project.

this is the only pic i could find. its right behind the bike.
