Looking to get an FC
Hello all, I'm starting to look for a 90 or so Rx-7, and believe me it's hard to find one around here so it'll be quite a while before I get it. But I haven't really found too many write ups on the problems they may have. I have a 96 Eclipse GSX and I'm not new to headaches with cars, though the rotary engine will be a new world to me. Is there anyone who knows a majority of the problems they go through? Any information would be helpful. Thanks.
Compression test the engine (has to be at a Mazda dealership) before you buy.check for leaks. look for smoke/smells (white smoke = coolant burning/ blue smoke = oil burning). And you should be fine.
When you buy first thing you do is replace the Pulsation Dampener (PD) as it is a leading cause of engine fires (they last aobut 10 years without problems but I'd replace every 8 years, and first when you get the car to be safe). Stay on top of oil levels (check every fillup at the gas station as rotaries INTENTIONALLY burn oil) and redline it at least once every 2 weeks to clear out the carbon build up on the rotors. (it's ok to redline a rotary, no damage unless prolonged high RPM)
When you test drive, try to test the A/C and drive with it on for a good bit of time to see if it overheats.
