Try killing the engine and see if it goes into gear easy with the car not running.
Does the clutch pedal stick to the floor?
You may be having problems with your clutch hydrolics.

I know enough about cylinder engines...i have a question i just got an 85 RX-7 13b FI...i want to know everything about rotaries... i'm also having a problem with the car. I'm told that the reason is its because the engine has been seating for so long and has lost compression, and that its the apex seals. I'm getting it rebuilt from someone on craigslist. for 800. He claims to be doing a basic rebuilt. I need advice whether i should go do it...heres the link to his ad..he also told me i had a one year warranty for the rebuilt. I want to know if its a good deal?..http://losangeles.craigslist.org/ant/pts/567225116.html

I have an 83, a similar thing happened to me. The slave master cylinder on the clutch assembly went. You can still shift into and out of gear but you have to rev match in order to not use the clutch and getting into first gear requires either a push or a small hill

Link not working. I would be very cautious of who says that they can rebuild a Rotary.

my 83 did that, (i think its what you were talking about) it shifted hard for a while, then it went into gear and wouldnt come out, you can move the shifter, but it does nothing, thats either a broken shift linkage, or broken shift fork, either way itll basically be a new transmission to fix it, but if you can still shift it, it could be worn syncros, which is the same fix, or it could be a bad clutch cylinder, whether master or slave, also a problem mine had, also check the hydraulic lines for your clutch, sometimes with that kind of age they rot, then you cant disengage the clutch...
