Default 12 A replacement carb. ??

I repowered my Samurai with a 12A about 10 years ago. I have never been real happy with the stock carb. I rebuilt it a few years back. I would replace it but they are very expensive even as rebuild. Do you Rotary enthusiasts replace these carbs with something else? I don't need performance, I need reliability and as inexpensive as possible as I am retired and living on a low fixed income. When I installed the engine I removed all the vac. switchs and parafanallia from the top of the engine, leaving only the carb. and distributor. It runs good when it warms up but is a bear too start sometimes and if you flood it you can forget starting it for a few hours.
Any and all suggestions will be appreciated;
Thanks ...Harry...

what year was the donor car where the motor came from? that tells me a little because the later model carbs were a lot better than the early model carbs. other than that, i don't think that there is a real cheap fix to an unreliable carb. there will be retrofitting and it will either take time, money, or both.

The donor car was a 1980 RX7 12A with a five speed.

IIRC, the major carb revision came out in 81 or 82, so you may be able to find a carb off of something 81-84 and swap it out.

the major visible difference is that the later model carb will have a throttle positioning sensor on the side. you don't have to use that and you can always rebuild the carb, so all that you need is for everything to be there. rebuild kit is about $25 from autozone i think. i just rebuilt one of these and one of the earlier carbs and it doesn't really take a lot on these things.

I will check the local PRE OWNED auto parts yards and see if I can locate a good one here in upstate South Carolina.
Thanks;
