Default Turning off the headlights when the car is on?

the title sums it up. ive got a 1998 protege and i wanted to know if there was a way to turn the headlights off when the car is running or even when the key is in the on position (where all the electronics go on). in other cars i have driven you can, but so far in my mazda when the key is in the on position the headlights are on. not full blast, i still have to turn them to the on position at night, but yeah, is there a way to kill them during the day or if i dont want them on at all?

thanks
