Outer boot on the pass side axle split. Not sure how long ago. While checking tires prior to replacing them, saw the split boot and grease everywhere. Watched a bunch of videos and it didn't seem too bad of a job (Cars always been either in SoCal or PHX, AZ so no rusty bolts). Went to Autozone to "borrow" a bunch of tools (big torque wrench, sockets, tie rod splitter and an "axle popper" tool). Everything came apart easily (as expected) but did have some issue getting the inner part of the axle joint off the intermediate shaft. The "popper" tool was useless (too big). Broke out the my big ball pen and a few bashes later, it gave up. However, getting the new one on was just as challenging. Tried to use the shaft like a slide hammer but could not get it past the retaining clip. Finally, a bit more persuasion in the form of a block of wood and my 20# sledgehammer. Of course, I choked up on the handle quite a bit. Put the axle nut on to protect the threads and a few good whacks got it to finally seat. The rest was the reverse of removal. While under there checked tie rods, sway bar links, brake lines, drive side axle, etc. Everything else look good. We'll get around to the driver side soon but it was just too hot today.
Some pics for your enjoyment.
Quick test drive around the street and Bob's my uncle.
