Smog part needed 2002 Protege5
Hi everyone,
I have a 2002 Protégé 5 that won't pass smog. I'm told I need the evap canister part? I'm having a difficult time finding one. Any ideas would be appreciated. My engine is the 2.0, I believe.
Thank you ~

Information we give to customers:
Emission Parts Locator Service
BAR contracts with the Foundation For California Community Colleges to provide a toll-free, statewide telephone Emission Parts Locator Service. The programs employees help motorists locate those hard-to-find emission control parts they need to bring their vehicles into compliance. However, if part(s) are not available, the Parts Locator issues a Limited Parts Exemption which is mailed to the motorist. The motorist must then make an appointment at one of BARs 36 Consumer Assistance and Referee Centers, where the vehicle will undergo a Smog Check inspection. The vehicle must pass all other aspects the inspection before the Referee can issue a Smog Check certificate.
Unfortunately if the first service shop doing the emission connected the vehicle to the BAR via the current required California Emission testing equipment and did not set to pre-test the vehicle will need to follow up at a California Emissions test facility only. The center will look for a qualifying replacement part usually a prof of purchase of that part identifying it in some way as allowable for use on CA emission equip vehicles or a service invoice provided from a licensed and qualified service shop indicating that the part was repaired.

Why?
First most who post DTC have no clue how to understand the proper way to determine how to find out if they are a hard DTC or a soft DTC created by effects of several anomalies. Many DIY and even some "mechanic's" still think that if you disconnect the battery on a OBDII (not OBDI) or Can-Bus ECU you can re-set a DTC as if that cured the issue. Sorry this is never correct and anyone reading the monitors can easily confirm this. You only turned off the dash check engine light and the unless the problem was correct the monitors will be in fault and the engine cycles 1-4 times and the check engine light will simply return if the problem was not correct in the first place. And if it does not return then you will never know what cause the anomalous condition that caused the ECU to activate the DTC and check engine light? As far as the OP test results it was already stated FAILED the Emission Test because.........
The question I am wondering is that ALL emissions are monitored by the ECU and the engine check light should have already been activated before emission testing? Most ALL legitimate shops would have for California unless your specific "OLDER" model vehicle has a monitor exception status allowable you will not pass the emission test. PERIOD! The ops MAZDA DOES NOT have any allowable exemptions in the monitors even if it were a 49 state MAZDA.
ASE/L1/CA qualified(expired 2020)
BTW Saudade I recognize reading many of your helpful responses on this forum that you are not an average DIY and even may have some automotive service training or at least experience working in a service shop in some capability?

That's my point. He should have an EVAP code set (large or small leak). If the inspector then determined the canister is the culprit, then repair or replacement is the only option to fix it. The limited parts exemption applies if " All other modification and/or failures of the Smog Inspection (that are not directly related to the part in question), must be corrected". https://asktheref.org/Services/Parts-Locator-Service
Since the OPs ultimate goal is to pass smog, the only way to get a complete picture is the see the entire results and hear from the OP about the inspection.
BTW the CA BAR does allow 1 readiness monitor to be "incomplete". See table 1: https://bar.ca.gov/Industry/OBD_Test_Reference

Hi gentlemen,
My apologies for the late reply.
I was not involved in the smog appointment, but I believe it was a pre-check. My friend is helping sell the car, so I will have to check with them tomorrow to find out more details. What they said is that an evap canister needs to be replaced. My friend looked online, but said the part was no longer manufactured.
I don't believe he received any paperwork but I will find out tomorrow.
I appreciate your reponses and I will post again after I have more accurate details.
With appreciation ~

Thanks for the update.
I checked a few sites and found the same (discontinued). However the one below doesn't say that and will allow adding to cart. Can't say they actually have one but you can call them to verify.
Evap Canister
Also if you scroll down in the listing and select "What This Fits", you'll see the other models in case you need to grab a salvage yard one.
Good Luck
