random no-starts: just clicking (battery fine)

random no-starts: just clicking (battery fine)
Puzzle me this: 2002 Protege 5 recently started not starting -- would either just click and nothing. Or click then eventually decide to turn over. At times will start up fine and behave fine for several days. Then randomly just clicking again.
Important (I think): Clicking noise seriously seems to eminate from the glove compartment or near it. Doesn't sound like the starter clicking.
Battery appears to be fine and, I assume, the alternator (which was replaced last year, actually).
Ideas that would explain the problem -- and the randomness?
