Default Overheating

93 protege is my dads work commuter. My mom borrowed it to go shopping and ran it out of water(found a leak in the water pump by the stains). Anyways, it overheated on her so she shut it down and called me to tow her home. Got it home, took a look at it and from what I can tell just from a visual inspection is that she blew the head gasket(won't know about a cracked head until I tear into it), but here is the kicker.....get the water pump leak fixed, fill it back up with water and try to start it, and all I get is cranking over, it just won't start. Is there a possibility that when this happened, it blew a sensor or the pcm or something else to cause it to not fire over?
