Will a bad cam or crank sensor stop the car from even trying to fire?

DEAD BATTERY.
Check your voltage across pos & neg terminals. Needs 12.65 to start. If it is not get a new one.
"it wouldn't start after a -30 degree storm."

There could be more DTC's that you don't know about.
ALSO: Go back to Basic's;Air, Fuel, Spark.
Battery.
Frozen Fuel Lines.

Check that your Distributor is working as designed.
Test for Battery Voltage on the WHITE/RED wires & BLACK/WHITE wires @ Distributor.
Test for ground on the BLACK/LIGHT GREEN wires & BLACK/PINK wires @ Distributor.
ALSO: Mazda has issued TSB# 002/98: Worn intakes vavles; engine will not start in cooler weather below 40 degrees Fahrenheit due to worn intake valves.The engine will not start, when its cold, unless you give it gas. It acts loaded up, then cleared out and runs. You need to push & hold the accelerator pedal to the floor, while cranking, to clear it out, then it should run.
Check the engine compression and cylinder leakage. If there is leakage past the valves, verify the cam timing is correct. If the problem is not cam timing, then inspect for worn intake valves.

Exclamation

What model vehicle is this any ways!!?? Protege Dx, Es, Lx ?? 1.5L? 1.8L?
Mazda Engine TSB #002/98 addresses low compression problems caused by worn intake valves. {cold weather can amplify this effect}
Good-Luck.

what types of air things should I check for? Any main sensors that would prevent it from trying to fire? I cleaned mass sensor, hose is solid no holes/crack. I looked at all hoses on top of engine and all look good.

seems the fuel would shut off after cranking and it not start.plugs shouldnt get that wet that fast.maybe fuel regulator or something.do you hear the pump?does it keep running while your NOT turning it over? a scanner is a must.points to a system to check.if the scanner says MAP or EGR bla bla bla,im sure you know not to just buy an EGR valve.done that one. im guessing its fuel regulation related.im guessing the check engine light is on?
