How to replace shift knob
 

Hi. I just bought my first Mazda. An 02 P5, and I really like it. The shift knob is pretty worn off, and I was wondering how hard it is to replace. Can anybody tell me how get the old one off? Is this easy. I do some work on my cars, but nothing too complicated.
Also, I'm interested in getting a full size spare tire. Does anybody else have one? Do they fit the well?

Shift knob will come off just like a bolt DanBeatty. Rotate in counterclockwise direction untill unthreaded from shifter. This method applies to the manual transmission and Sport shift auto trans.
If you have the regular 4 speed auto trans then there are a couple of phillip screws to remove and also wiring for the hold button will need to be disconnected down in the console and pulled up thru the shifter shaft as knob is being removed. Much more difficult so hope you and the simple one.

if you have a manual, the shift knob might be a little hard to get loose, but it will spin loose.

how hard did you have to turn the thing to get it off? ive been trying to twist my knob off but im scared i might tweek my actual shift rod, ive got a 01.

It was tight, but I think it just used one hand and really twisted. There was no lock washer or anything. Good luck.

you won't hurt the shifter taking off the ball.
