How to change a coil pack on 2003 Protege
Hi. In an effort to save money we are attempting to change the coil pack ourselves. Hopefully it doesn't end up costing us more in the long run. LOL. Have heard that it isn't too difficult. Looking to find out where the coil packs are located. And any easy to follow instructions please.

is it a coil pack or distributor cap? also what is the model is it just a 2003 mazda protege sedan? or mazda speed of mazda 3/5? if the coil pack is on the front frame driver side it basicly unplugs from the spark plug wires and i think its like 3 or 4 bolts holding it down and it comes right out if its a distributor cap take the cap off then there is a striker part that spins around that fires the wires thats the part that gets replaced and i think its like 2 screws and 4 wires and thats about it but if you let us know the car model we can give you more of an idea on what to do.

Thank you :)
As we quickly found out, the coil packs are right on top of the spark plugs. Very easy to locate and were only held down by a few bolts the new one was easy to pop on and snap into place. We are going to replace the other side tonight just for good measure. Thank you so much for your reply and willingness to give us some advice, we appreciate it. Also the car is a 2003 Mazda protege LX sedan. Again thanks!

We replaced the coil packs because.....
The car was not accelerating properly. You would have to give it alot of gas and then it would chug and then lurch forward very hard... Also the car would shake and vibrate when waiting on a stop light and act like it wanted to die.... In other words, it just ran like crap. LOL!

I don't know if you can tell...
they are going bad, I think they just go out. And you will definitely know cause it will act like it is going to die and shake so bad like the engine is going to fall out. LOL. And I diagnosed the problem by going online and typing in what my Mazda was doing and those symptoms all pointed to the one of the coil packs definitely needing to be replaced. The car runs as good as new now. Glad I could help out with some info.
