frustrating no start condition
1999 protege 1.6L 5 speed. will not start after driving as few as 12 miles and being allowed to "heat soak" for approximately 20 minutes after parking. i can duplicate this everytime without fail. In this no start condition i have confirmed there is no fire to spark plugs. the only DTC is a CMP sensor code. i have replaced the CMP, CKP, main & fuel pump relays, a coil found jumping fire to the cam cover and the CMP connector pigtail. Does anybody on this forum have any idea what my next step might be. A friend owns a repair shop and they threw it out there on Identifix and no one came up with anything i haven't done.
it runs perfectly, although it occurred once at, highway speed (75+mph) with my wife, and we have swapped cars until i figure this out because my trip to work is only 7 miles round trip.
I also have a 99' 1.6 protege 5 speed with a no crank no start condition. I have to turn the key over rapidly several times and then it will start. when it doesn't start at all and I turn the key and hear a click coming from the passenger side firewall. I can always get it to start I just have to turn the key a lot sometimes. Can someone please give their input on this matter?
ssw, it sounds like a typical starter motor problem. If the motor or solenoid is weak, it could be a bad, or weakening winding within. Replace the starter motor.
Either that, or the starter you have is not receiving enough current/voltage due to poor connections somewhere. I've never owned a Protégé, but have read this is common. This is where I personally would start to look.
Pull ALL the terminals off the starter, clean and reinstall them. Also, make sure you have at least one good, clean ground lead to the chassis of the car. Two would be better since this is a known issue. Any or all of this could lead to what you are experiencing.
